PET/CT SCAN
- When making your appointment, please inform us if you are or think you may be pregnant, are currently nursing, or if you are a diabetic.
- Discontinue any strenuous exercise 48 hours prior to your appointment. No long walks or carrying of heavy items. Do not chew gum, suck on candy or cough drops, or use mints during fasting period.
- Eat only low carbohydrate foods – such as meats and vegetables – 24 hours prior to your scheduled appointment. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK fruits, fruit juices, refined sugars such as sodas, or starchy foods such as breads or pasta. Do not consume any caffeinated drinks or foods. (See list below.)
- Do not eat or drink anything other than water 6 hours prior your PET scan. Patients are encouraged to DRINK 2 TO 3 GLASSES OF PLAIN WATER BEFORE ARRIVING.
- Continue any medication as normal unless instructed by your physician. (See list below.)
- Wear loose, warm, comfortable clothes. No zippers, snaps, metal buttons, or underwire bras – eye glasses and hearing aids can be worn.
- No nicotine for 12 hours prior to scan
- Please notify CBCC prior to the scan if you are claustrophobic and will require medication to relax. If you do require sedation, you will need to have someone drive you home after the scan – otherwise it is perfectly safe to drive yourself to and from your scan.
- Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment time in order to allow time for completion of a questionnaire and the starting of an IV. Please note, arriving less than 30 minutes prior to your appointment time may result in a delay or the rescheduling of your appointment.
- Your appointment will last for about 2 hours.
Please note that the radioactive isotope dose for your PET SCAN is ordered the day prior to the scan. If for any reason you are not going to make your appointment, you must notify us by 3:30 PM the day before your appointment. If the dose is not cancelled, you will be charged the cost of the isotope.
Dietary Preparation
No Carbohydrates (avoid foods and drinks containing sugars or starches):
Stop eating 24 hours prior to appointment
- Bread, pasta, rice, cereal, crackers, chips
- Potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, peas, beans, lentils
- Fruit and fruit juices
- Milk, yogurt, ice cream
- Candy, desserts, pastries, chocolate
- Sugary drinks (soda, sports drinks, sweetened tea/coffee)
- Ensure shakes
- Alcohol
Allowed (Low-Carb / Protein & Fat Foods):
Stop eating 6 hours prior to appointment
- Meat, poultry, fish, seafood
- Eggs
- Cheese, butter, cream
- Plain nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans)
- Non-starchy vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach, zucchini, peppers, cucumbers, mushrooms)
- Avocados
- Glucerna Protein shakes
- Water
NOTES ABOUT YOUR MEDICATIONS:
If you take medication for diabetes, please read the instructions below. Your blood sugar level must be
lower than 200 mg/dl or we will have to reschedule the scan. All other medications may be taken as
normal with water.
- Short Acting must be held for 6 hours prior to appointment
- Long Acting must be held for at least 12 hours prior to appointment
- Any other oral diabetic medications should be taken a minimum of 6 hours before the scan.
- Insulin Pumps, Parenteral Feeding, and IV dextrose should be discontinued 4 hours prior
