Cory Corrales
In 2002, Cory was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma blood cancer. Her unwavering spirit and extraordinary strength at such a young age would unknowingly be vital to her decades later, and translate into motivation, hope and positivity for future generations.
With her battle against lymphoma behind her, Cory remained consistent with her checkups, aware of the higher risk for secondary cancers. Her vigilance paid off, as a routine mammogram detected her second battle with early breast cancer in 2020.
Getting Through Treatment
After overcoming the “c” word as a young adult, Cory found hope through faith, family, and perseverance. She is thankful for every day and every moment, and decided to seek follow up treatment at CBCC to be closer to her hometown of Shafter where she felt most connected. As a survivor, Cory channels her passions and experiences into a teaching career where she is able to instill positivity into future generations while helping her students dream big, live healthy, and value opportunities.
Fast forward to 2020, when Cory’s strength was tested once again following her annual breast health appointment. “The mammogram found what I couldn’t feel,” Cory says, underscoring the importance of regular screenings. “I was diagnosed with breast cancer.”
Her journey brought her back to CBCC, guided by the same spirit that got her through her first fight 18 years before. A mastectomy without reconstruction marked the beginning of her second cancer journey. Through the physical challenges, Cory’s spirit remained unbroken. “Regaining strength back in my left side after surgery was another little encouragement to keep pushing,” she says.
Cory was relieved to have CBCC on her side. “Dr. Patel explained things to me in a completely different way,” Cory recalls, highlighting the stark contrast between her experience at CBCC and other institutions. “Just the outpouring of love and support that I had gotten made everything seem not so scary.”
Amidst her treatment, Cory continued to draw courage from the community that surrounded her, this time including her beloved students. Cory’s determination shone through even the toughest moments, as she found solace in staying active, running on treadmills and working. She could not wait to get back to the classroom.
Getting Back to Life
With both battles behind her, Cory’s message is clear: cancer is not the end. She’s an embodiment of resilience and hope, urging everyone to “go and live your life, do the things you love, and take care of yourself.” Her journey speaks to the unity of community and the strength that can be found in the simplest gestures. “You are not alone,” she reminds us.
Dr. Patel and CBCC played an instrumental role in her journey, not just as medical professionals but as pillars of support. “There’s never been a time that I’ve walked in there [at CBCC] and not felt like someone’s going to help me,” Cory affirms. “It’s just a different feeling.”
