He completed his residency in OB/GYN at the University of Florida, Jacksonville and then was selected to complete subspecialty training in Gynecologic Oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY.
Dr. Tammela practiced for the past 13 years in Green Bay, WI, where he established the first gynecologic oncology program in Northeast Wisconsin. In doing so he brought expert subspecialty cancer care close to home for the first time for thousands of women. Dr. Tammela is a trailblazer in his field, having established the first full time Robotic Gynecologic Oncology program in Northeast Wisconsin over 10 years ago, when robotic surgery was just beginning to show clinical promise in surgical cancer care. Dr. Tammela became a proctor and instructor for colleagues desiring to train in robotic surgery, and has himself performed almost 1000 robotic surgeries.
In recognition of Dr. Tammela’s intense dedication to women’s cancer care during his many years in the Green Bay community, he won a number of awards, including the “Living the Mission Award” at St Vincent Hospital for commitment to excellence, and the “Innovator of the Year Award,” given by the Green Bay Business Journal in recognition of Dr. Tammela as an innovator in cancer treatment and robotic minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Tammela arrives in Bakersfield as the only full time robotically-trained board certified Gynecologic Oncologist surgeon in the south Central Valley. Dr. Tammela is looking forward to using his experience and expertise to once again bring expert fellowship-trained subspecialty Gynecologic Oncology care closer to home for the women in the south Central Valley community. Patients and their families will no longer need to travel great distances for cutting edge women’s gynecologic cancer care.
Dr. Tammela is triple board certified in Gynecologic Oncology, Hospice and Palliative Care, and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
